Ecotoxicology & Environmental Safety Studies

Safeguarding ecosystems – one substance at a time.

At IIBAT, we offer a robust portfolio of ecotoxicology and environmental fate studies designed to evaluate the impact of chemicals, agrochemicals, and biocides on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Our services are essential for global regulatory submissions, including REACH, EPA, CLP, BPR, and OECD compliance.

Using internationally recognized guidelines and validated methods, we help you demonstrate environmental safety, meet legal obligations, and reduce ecological risks.

🌿 Why Environmental Testing Matters

Environmental safety testing is a regulatory requirement for any product that may enter soil, water, or air—either directly or through waste, runoff, or emissions.

Ecotoxicology helps answer:

  • Is this product safe for aquatic life, pollinators, or soil organisms?
  • How long will the substance persist in the environment?
  • What degradation products are formed—and are they hazardous?

These insights form the core of environmental risk assessments for agrochemicals, industrial chemicals, biocides, and household products.

🧪 Our Ecotoxicology & Environmental Services

We conduct comprehensive ecotoxicology and environmental fate studies to assess the impact of substances on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. These studies support chemical registration and environmental risk assessments under global frameworks such as REACH, EPA, and OECD.

1. Aquatic Ecotoxicology

Objective: Evaluate the toxicity of substances to freshwater and marine organisms.

Test Species & Endpoints:

  • Algae (OECD 201) – Growth inhibition (EC₅₀, NOEC)
  • Daphnia magna (OECD 202, 211) – Immobilisation and reproduction
  • Fish (OECD 203, 210) – Acute toxicity and early life stage development
  • Lemna sp. (OECD 221) – Macrophyte growth inhibition

Required for REACH, EPA, and WHO pesticide submissions
Conducted in controlled GLP aquatic facilities

2. Terrestrial Ecotoxicology

Objective: Assess the impact of chemicals on non-aquatic organisms and soil health.

Our capabilities include:

  • Earthworm acute and reproduction toxicity (OECD 207, 222)
  • Soil microbial activity tests (OECD 216, 217)
  • Avian acute oral toxicity studies
  • Terrestrial arthropods (e.g., predatory mites, parasitoids)

Critical for agrochemical product assessments and biocide registrations
Compliant with EU and US guidelines

3. Pollinator Risk Assessment

Objective: Assess toxicity to honeybees and support pollinator-friendly product development.

We perform:

  • Acute oral and contact toxicity tests (OECD 213 & 214)
  • Semi-field/tunnel studies (EPPO 170)
  • Chronic exposure and brood development tests
  • Risk quotients and hazard characterization for pollinator exposure

Mandatory for insecticides, fungicides, and plant protection products
Supports sustainable agriculture and biodiversity goals

4. Environmental Fate & Behavior Studies

Objective: Determine the persistence, degradation, and mobility of chemicals in the environment.

We offer:

  • Hydrolysis in water (OECD 111)
  • Photolysis in water and on soil surfaces
  • Ready and inherent biodegradability tests (OECD 301–303)
  • Simulation studies in soil and aquatic environments (OECD 307–309)
  • Adsorption/desorption studies (OECD 106)

Supports DT50, Koc, and PEC/PNEC calculations for environmental risk models
Helps define buffer zones, no-spray areas, and safety intervals

5. Chemical Risk Assessment & Regulatory Support

Objective: Integrate ecotoxicological data into full environmental safety dossiers.

Our services include:

  • Environmental exposure modeling
  • PBT/vPvB evaluations (Persistent, Bioaccumulative, Toxic)
  • Risk quotient calculation and hazard classification
  • Preparation of environmental sections in REACHCLPEPA, and BPR dossiers

Customized reports aligned with ECHA and EPA expectations
Scientific justification for waiver requests and data extrapolation
